Operational Amplifier
A d-c amplifier whose gain is sufficiently large that its characteristics and behavior are substantially determined by its input and feedback elements.

Frequency Response
The band of frequencies over which a control signal can effectively modulate the output.

Programming Speed
A measure of a power supply's ability to respond to a varying command to change its output setting from one level to another.

In fast programmable linear power supplies the output capacitor is removed and therefore fast output voltage slewing can be achieved. Depending on the model, the rise and fall times can be in the range of 10 to 100 microseconds. By contrast, switch-mode programmable power supplies (such as Kepco's RKW series) exhibit rise and fall times 1000 times slower, depending on the size of the output capacitor and the size of the load.

Bipolar source-sink instruments (BOP), in power ratings up to 400 watts rely on linear series-pass technology to offer full four-quadrant output. Their output voltage passes smoothly from plus to minus without any transition glitch as it passes through zero. Since their output current also can be controlled through zero, their net output can be both a source or sink, useful for powering magnets for beam steering, particle acceleration, battery exercising and simulation, motor testing, photoelectric array characterization, electro-plating and wafer deposition applications.
